As Australia’s second busiest airport and the main Southern aviation hub for the country, the Melbourne Airport late last year identified the need for the existing Taxiway facilities to be enhanced to ensure the infrastructure could accommodate the growing demand and the new pavement and lighting technology. Following a strong working relationship of over 5 years, PSA was engaged by Melbourne Airport to provide independent tender programme assessments, monitoring of construction progress and time claim assessments.
The Taxiway sections included Alpha, Bravo and Charlie and consisted of replacing the existing northern most section of the taxiway in a staged manner to allow for the ongoing use of the runway throughout the construction phase. This also involved increasing the blast pavement to accommodate large aircrafts like the Airbus A380 and replacing and reinstalling the Aeronautical Ground lighting on the replaced pavement sections.
Strict operating hours, embargo periods and construction zone limitations were placed on the Contractor - Fulton Hogan, this required the program plan to be closely monitored by David and Michael from PSA and kept up to date. The regular monitoring process improved the co-ordination of Fulton Hogan’s works with other works in the precinct and allowed the scheduling of escorts for safe access to and from the site to the compound.
PSA congratulate the Taxiway Bravo Project Team and contractor Fulton Hogan on delivering the project on time and on the outcome of an upgraded taxiway compliant with the current regulations.
